Many consumers are looking for healthier forms of cooking and are turning to more natural foods to enhance their efforts. There are already some property owners who have begun to take advantage of small scale grain growing. They are catering to the sale of the grain within their communities to stores like bakeries and local farmers markets.

 

By the consumers of grains being able to buy fresh grain that is locally grown it allows them to implement this new trend of roasted grains in different fashions.

 

A good example of this is one small level farmer in Sierra Nevada who is doing this with the growing of wheat. While it may seem strange to simply roast wheat, there are some great cooks who are actually doing this and reaping the benefits of what this grain has to offer in its most natural form.

 

This is just an example for growing one type of grain. There are several other grains that are high on the nutrient list that can be nicely roasted. These are the ones that are growing quickly in popularity for roasted grains.

 

Quinoa As One of the Healthiest Grains

 

While all grains are considered to be healthy one that is moving quickly to the top of the list is Quinoa. It took a while before this grain really took off in popularity. There were a few though that saw its potential, and as property owners that had enough land to grow this crop they took a risk that this grain held a very bright future, and they decided to invest in it. This turned out to be a great success story where the crops were being grown in Colorado. There are many excellent recipes for roasting or toasting Quinoa.

 

Back Yard Grain Growing Can Become Profitable

 

With this new insurge of roasting grains and the supported health benefits of grains, almost anyone can turn their property into a profit maker. With just enough land to grow a small crop of any one of the grains it can be turned into a small scale grain raising operation.

 

Roasted grains of many different types can be utilized in many different ways. They can be used in salads, as a topping for cooked meals including deserts, nutrition bars and even beverages. Keith Welch, a land agent for RecLand Realty, recently listed a 10 acre tract with an active grain roasting operation in north Louisiana. He has learned some additional benefits of roasted grains from the owners. “Their business is largely roasting and bagging soybeans and corn for supplemental wildlife feed,” Keith said. “Our large hunting industry, and the desire of hunters and land managers to use supplemental feeds for deer, is a major driver of his business.”

 

In addition to the palatability of the roasted grains and the aroma that attracts deer, Keith mentioned two other benefits of roasted grains for hunters and land managers. “The black bears in our region seem to be less attracted to the roasted grains as much as the usual products people often use. The roasted grains can lay on the ground longer, too, and not spoil as quickly due to moisture. This helps it to last longer and be healthier when consumed by wildlife.”
